What is La Masia?
La Masia was founded in 1979 as a pioneering project: a place where young talents could live, study, and develop both as footballers and as individuals.
Located near the old Camp Nou, the original farmhouse, an 18th-century Catalan farmhouse, became a symbol of the club’s focus on player development.
The goal was never just to create great footballers, but to develop great people.
At La Masia, every young player learns that respect, effort, humility, teamwork, and ambition are just as important as technique or tactical knowledge.
The Origin of the Barça Model
La Masia grew under the direction of Johan Cruyff in the 1980s. Cruyff championed a style based on possession, creativity, and tactical intelligence, known as “positional play.”
This philosophy, combined with the daily work of the youth academy coaches, created Barça’s unique DNA, which defines the club to this day.
Since then, the academy has become a global benchmark in developing technically gifted, intelligent players with a strong understanding of teamwork.
From La Masia to the World
Legends like Pep Guardiola, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi all came through La Masia.
They share a common foundation: the values of the youth academy and a style of play that prioritizes the team over individual glory.
In 2010, Barça achieved a historic milestone: all three Ballon d’Or finalists, Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta, were products of La Masia, underscoring the academy’s unprecedented success.
La Masia in the 21st Century
In 2011, the new La Masia was inaugurated, featuring modern facilities adapted to the demands of today’s football.
More than 70 young footballers live, study, and train there under the guidance of coaches, mentors, psychologists, teachers, and nutritionists. The mission remains the same: to develop people first, and footballers second.

La Masia is more than a training center: it’s a family, a way of understanding football and life. Every player who passes through learns that wearing the Barça shirt represents something bigger than oneself: a philosophy of playing, competing, and behaving on and off the pitch.
